What is Track Training?
Want to get quicker? Speed work is what you need. These sessions are for all abilities. You don’t have to be able to run at a certain speed to attend. Don’t be put off by the fact it’s held at a running track. You do not have to run super-fast. You run at your speed and no one else’s. The session will be run by our very experienced Terry Brightwell.
This type of training is perfect over the summer if you are running an autumn marathon.
Arrive to start at 6.30pm with a dynamic warm up and then into the session where you will be running at a fast rate and then a slow jog or a walk over short varying distances or maybe one set distance. You will cover around 3 miles during the session on top of the distance for the warm up and cool down. The session will be explained to you after the warm up. You may have heard these sessions called interval training or Fartlek. The idea is to get your heart rate up for a short time and then let it recover and keep repeating. Over many sessions this will make you faster over longer periods.
So how is this going to help you with running your marathon? During the speed sessions you will mostly run close to or at 100% of your ability. Of course you will not run at 100% for your marathon. You might manage 6 miles but then you’ll die in a heap at the side of the road (well it feels like that). You will run your marathon at around 80% of your ability so you can keep going for the longer distance.
By doing these speed sessions you will improve your 100% effort and your speed will become quicker. So if your 100% effort is quicker than your 80% effort will also be quicker so your marathon will be quicker.
What is Hill Training?
You cannot avoid hills so train for them! Come and join in this Kenyan hills style training session and fear hills no more.
Meet at the cafe for a 6.30pm start with a warm up. The hills session will last around 30 minutes with a cool down afterwards. Gain confidence and fitness and you’ll soon be overtaking up hills!

What are Club Championships?
The club championship is a friendly competition for all members. It is predominately based on the 10 events of the Kent Grand Prix with local events added in and a marathon of your choice. The marathon must be an official measured event.
To compete in the club championship you must wear club colours when you run. If you run in any of the events listed for the championship that year you will automatically be counted and your points will be taken from the event results.
Up to 6 events will be counted. Your best 6 will score if you run more than 6. You will get 10 points for running in the event. The first 20 members of each sex to finish will score extra points with the first home scoring 20 points descending to the twentieth home scoring 1 point.
Men’s and ladies are scored separately. There will be awards for overall men’s and ladies and then age groups as follows. Men’s seniors, V40, V50 and V60. Ladies seniors, V35, V45, V55.
Awards will be presented at the annual club presentation night. All members are very welcome to participate no matter what your reason for running is or how competitive you are.
What are East Kent Relays?
In the summer from May to July the club takes part in the East Kent Relay Series. Clubs form around east Kent including us host the events. It is a series of road relays held on Tuesday evenings with legs between 2 and 2.5 miles. Teams are formed according to age group. Senior and V40 men compete in teams of four while the V50 men, V60 men and women’s teams compete in teams of three.
Scores take the form of a league and awards are presented at the last event in the series at the running track in Canterbury.
Although it is a competition it is a very friendly, casual event. You do not have to be a super fast runner. It is a great opportunity to get together with friends and have a mid-week blast. Clubs take a picnic for the presentation evening which makes for a nice social summer evening.
The Kent Fitness League is an enjoyable cross-country series for non-elite athletes (sub-34 10K men and sub-38 10K women are barred). Races are staged across Kent from October to March and the league has currently 18 clubs competing.
Although a competition you can use the series as you wish. You might want to race, you might want to use it as specific training or you might just want to enjoy running off road for a change which is what most of us do.
There are awards at the end of the season for individuals and teams. There is no limit to the number of members that can run but we must have 8 men and 4 ladies including at least 1 male over 40, 2 male over 50, 1 female over 35 and 1 female over 45 to score properly.
These races are very well attended by all clubs across the county and are really good fun more than anything.
