Going the Extra Mile

What seems to be like a lifetime ago, pre COVID-19 I had the opportunity of having a gait analysis with James Maybourn at the Bay Running Shop.

James and Matt assessed my running technique. To my surprise I am a “heel” striker (not the best running technique) James gave me some instructions on how to improve my technique. I would need time to practice until it becomes natural to me.

The trainers chosen to best suited to my running technique was the Brookes Glycerin, neutral cushioned for all round comfort (this is not a technical review, ask James for more details).  My go to trainers for most of my running has been New Balance, at the moment NB 1080, they are like slipping on a pair of comfty slippers, I was a little apprehensive.

I had a track marathon booked in 10 days, never having run a track marathon before I was looking forward to something different. It was a chip and time event and was affiliated to EA, so a good for age could be had. I had entered a new age group, so I thought may as well give it a go.

Much given advice between runners, one being never run a marathon in new trainers, well I did, the Brookes did not let me down (I did take my 1080’s as a back- up, but was not needed).

At first instance you may feel a track marathon is “easy” given its flat and good terrain, however in reality, I found it mentally tough. It was 109 laps to complete a marathon, half the circuit was running into the wind leaving the rest of the lap to recover. I tried to remember James points of good running technique: engage the core, improve arm position, lift knees higher, midfoot plant and increase cadence – easier said than done!

I was looking at my watch, 109 laps whoop, whoop, finished, but to my dismay the time keeper said another six laps to complete the marathon !!!! This was because Lane 1 was reserved out of running etiquette for the “Steve Hobbs” runners, we mere mortals mostly ran in lanes 2-3. Officially completed the marathon in 04 hours 17 min, actually ran 27.2 miles. I stopped my watch at 26.4 miles 04.08.00 hrs. Achieved a good for age group which is a sub 04.30 hrs for over 60 cat.

Note to self: do not wear no -show inijini socks with chip timing ankle band.
