Dartmoor Discovery 32 Mile Ultra Marathon – Race Report –

I recently ran The Dartmoor discovery or DD as it’s known.

It’s the only proper Road Ultra left in the UK.

At 32 miles 899 yards long, over 4 thousand feet of climb and some of the downhills worse than the uphills, you have to show it respect!

It’s been going since 1998 but I have only done 5 of them due to it always being a week after The Grand Union Canal race, of which I was a serial offender for 20 years.

I last did it 2 years ago but due to health problems and no training it was a DNF (did not finish). You cannot just get round this course, you have to put in the work.

This time I did the training. I even did 5 marathons on the bounce 2 road and 3 trail. Being in my 70s I found this difficult and it wasn’t a problem in the past.

It would be good to see some of our local runners there, as all the old runners I know seem to have given up through age.

Next year’s race is on June 7th, entries open in November but be warned that it soon fills up! This is a proper old school Road Ultra Marathon.
