Hildenborough 5 mile race report
The 5th instalment of the TRAC club championships had an unusual start time of 2.30pm and saw us travel to the rural village of Hildenborough.
The journey up was slow and frustrating through all the roadworks, but we arrived in enough time to pick up our race bibs and have a short warm up, before everyone was huddled under the gazebo trying to avoid the rain.
As if by magic the rain stopped 5 mins before the start. Considering the weather forecast had 100% rain and lightning, we were quite lucky really.
Unfortunately the start and finish lines were somewhat squelchy by this time and it felt like we were lining up for cross country rather than a road race.
The course was undulating throughout the Hildenborough country roads. The first mile was a gradual uphill before the 2.5 mile race peeled off to the left to make their return and we kept on going on the 5 mile course.
The downhill section to the finish line was very welcome, but then we had to slow down to navigate the slippery, wet finish stretch. Good fun, but I’m not sure my road racing shoes were designed to hold all that mud!
Well done to everyone, especially those racing after some very recent marathons.
Jay Bailey was first back for team TRAC, closely followed by Matt McCarthy and Chris Brenchley.
Asmaa Hatmin led the ladies home after her marathon just 8 days ago! Followed by Jo Kemp and Nikki Boyes who both came 3rd in their respective age groups.
Well done to Maisie Kemp from the juniors who competed in the 2.5 mile race, also achieving 3rd in the juniors age group.
