Thanet Coastal 10 & 5 Mile

  • Sunday 1st December 2024

Using most of the Alan Green 10 mile route from previous years, Thanet Road Runners, for the 2nd time, teamed up with Sporting Events UK to put on this popular and SOLD OUT 10 & 5 mile race along the beautiful coast line in North Thanet.

Firstly we would like to say a big thanks to all the volunteers and marshalls who gave up their own time in cold conditions to make this event take place.

A special thanks also to Anna, the Marshall Secretary who gave up so much of her own time and worked so hard in the build up to this event. It was made doubly difficult by the addition of a farmers market on the route which meant last minute changes and the absence of so many other TRACies who were flying the team flag that same morning at Knole Park!

Despite all these challenges the day was a great success and Thanet Road Runners AC came away with many trophies!!

A number of our club runners taking part were asked for a few lines to give their race day experience:

From Georgia Hughes:

A few miles into the race I suddenly remembered how difficult last year was (December wind/cold etc) and quickly questioned my entry! Getting a PB last year was a dream – and matching my latest PB in this race was brilliant. I thank the fab marshals and Thanet Roadrunners team for keeping me going. You really are the BEST 💙🎽

From Sarah Manser:

Really enjoyed the 5 mile race today. Loved the route  including the cheeky slope after the Turner! The Marshalls were so encouraging ! Will definitely do it again !

From Dan Grech

Since my triathlon at the beginning of September; my training has focused on the Thanet Coastal 10miler. The goal was to run a V.Dot equivalent time for the distance as a Sub 3hr Marathon. This meant 1h4m30s; which would be over 6mins off my previous best earlier this year.

I set off with confidence and soon found myself alone running and was like that the entirety of the race. I settled into a pace which I felt I could sustain and throughout the race barely dropped below target pace. I smashed the target by over a minute as well as setting a 10km PB en route.

I’m over the moon with how training and the race has gone and now is giving me loads of confidence heading into this marathon block.

From Charlotte Barton

Another year of Thanet 10 ticked off, an event I always make sure to show up to. This year didn’t disappoint with plenty of friendly faces and wonderful marshals really making those miles fly by.

It would be rude not to mention the weather as it’s usually atrocious, however this year things were different… The rain held off and the wind (no stranger to this event) actually worked to our advantage for once! Giving us a bit of a beasting on the way out but pushing us home nicely.

All in all a good day out for Thanet despite the clash with XC!

From Andy Stevens:

As this was my first shorter distance race since March and a summer knee injury, my aims were quite straightforward; run as consistently as possible in terms of mile splits & aim for sub 6 minute miles and avoid aggravating the knee.

There was a bit of crosswind on the course but not as bad as it could have been.  Great support from the marshalls which was appreciated. Job done on all pre-race targets and 3rd place was secured. Great to see Louis and Olly, two of our junior runners heading the field, which meant we secured a 1-2-3 in the 5 miler. Due to some route confusion, the course was around 300m short but still a good outing.

From Georgie Judge:
I didn’t know what to expect or how fast to run as I hadn’t run this long of a distance in a long time. However, I enjoyed the race so much (apart from the hill☠️) and I loved seeing all the TRAC volunteers supporting us at their checkpoints. A big thank you to Georgia for helping to pace me throughout the race 🙂
