TRAC – Joint Runner of the Month – January –

January runner of the month was a dead heat, so we have TWO winners…

MIKE JAMES

Mike James joined Thanet Roadrunners and the cross country team in 2024, having been a solo runner all his life.  As a V60 runner, Mike has been a valuable asset to our men’s team and overall TRAC, scoring highly in all the races so far.  Mike is a very friendly and humble runner, who was unaware that he literally saves the team hundreds of placings each time he runs.  His participation has been a big part of TRAC scoring second in the Minnis Bay XC, our highest ever placing. The team overall is really benefitting from a big group of committed runners, many of whom, like Mike, are new to Kent cross country.  Many congratulations Mike!  We’re delighted you joined us!

In typical Mike form, he said he’s really surprised to be nominated as he runs at the speed of a hedgehog!  (Dream on!) He feels the run leaders all deserve recognition for their dedication to the club and the support they give to everyone.  We do agree with that!

We asked Mike some questions about the club:

Q. What attracted you to join TRAC?
A. I had entered a couple TRAC events prior to joining and was impressed by how well organised these were as well as how friendly and supportive everyone was.  I also liked that it caters for such a wide range of ages, abilities and events, including a lot of socials.

Q. Whats your best moment?
A. With TRAC, when I was still new to the club, I remember towards the end of my first Kent XC event seeing a group of other TRACies by the line encouraging me and the rest of their remaining team mates to the finish. You don’t get that on those solo winter night training runs. It said a lot about the club culture and was a great way to end the race.  Everyone is SO encouraging.

Q. What would you say to a new person who is considering joining?
A. Do!  Whether you are starting from scratch or an experienced runner, you will be able to find people to run with at your level and have a lot fun too.

Q. What does the club mean to you?
A. As a life-long and usually solo runner, I have really enjoyed running with others.  The club is a great community to do that with. It’s a fun and friendly group.  I wish I had joined years ago!

ADE NEAVES

Everyone knows Ade – he is such a friendly and supportive character! Ade has done a great job over the last year building the Sunday run and making it a run suitable for all abilities.  He has also led Wednesday hills training, in all weathers.  He built up his own running, completing the Great North Run in 2024, despite some challenges and setbacks. He is also one of our ‘all weather’ cross country runners.  Ade consistently support the club, encourages runners and takes being covered in mud with good humour. Many congratulations Ade!

We asked Ade a few questions about what the club meant to him…

Q. What attracted you to join TRAC?
A. I’d been running on my own for sometime and was told about TRAC, I didn’t think I was worthy but went along to find a friendly welcoming bunch, who encouraged me along the way.

Q. What’s your best moment?
A. There are so many but a few stick in my mind, my first ever half Marathon that I ran with Steve Clarke getting over the finish line with a tear in my eye.
Also two other half marathons Tromso in Norway in the midnight Sun and The Great North run, both of these with Jon Holl supporting each other along the way.

Q. What would you say to a new person who is considering joining?
A. Don’t be afraid, do it!  The best thing I ever did was join TRAC. Most of my social life revolves around the club with friends that I’d never of had if I didn’t go along, we are a friendly encouraging bunch so come along and give us a try.
