Trophies galore at the ‘Run Whitstable & Herne Bay Summer 5k, 10k and Half Marathon

A windy day saw 4 traccies take on a Half Marathon and 5k race.

Below are the race reports from three of them:

From Alex Dugard:

Having started my training for the Great North Run, I wanted to test myself and see what time I could run for the half marathon. The Run Whitstable & Herne Bay Half Marathon was an opportunity to do this. A windy day made this a challenge and being on my own from the start was also difficult.

I finished in 1:21:29, a couple of minutes off a PB, but I was happy with the effort and now I can get stuck into training for the GNR to try and get that PB.

From Claire Morgan:

I haven’t done a 5k for a good few years so today my main 2 goals were to see where I was at fitness wise over the 5k distance and, to not give up mentally and quit.  It was a challenge against myself more than anything but, if I could get close to my PB, set in 2021, or even beat it, that would be an added bonus.
When I arrived in Herne Bay, todays gift from the British Summer weather was, wind! Thankfully, no rain, but, it was super windy!
Head wind for 2.5k on the way out and tail wind for 2.5k on the way back which was certainly the more favorable order!
I did find the first half a bit of a struggle and running solo, I didn’t have anyone I could tuck behind and use as an unknowing wind shield. Of course, I did consider quitting at 2k and I was going through every possible excuse in my head for a reason to actually quit.

I didn’t get a PB nor did I even get close to my PB which is a bit disappointing but, I did not quit and, I finished the race so I am really pleased about that.  I finished 8th place overall and was 2nd female.
Overall I am pleased with how I felt during the race and this have given me a well needed confidence boost in terms of my fitness and my ability.
I’ve had a love / hate, mainly hate, relationship with races over the last few years and I tend to generally avoid them at all costs but I do want to get myself back into races so today was a good step in the right direction.

From Dan Grech:

Whitstable Fix Events Summer Run 2024.

2 years ago I did the half on the hottest day of the year; this time it was one of the windiest runs. My goal prior to the event was to win; after setting a new PB on the track I was confident in myself.

After seeing Alex D set off for his half and flying filled me with excitement and adrenaline. My aim was to stick behind some of the 10k runners and use them as wind shields for the first half of the race. Into the head wind was horrendous and luckily I managed to save energy for most of the first 2.5km. I was in the lead at the turn and now had the wind behind me.

After weaving through dogs and other runners on the small path; I was back on the promenade and able to settle into a rhythm for the final mile. I could hear 2nd place (lead female – Amy) breathing behind me and this kept me pushing all the way. Managed to get faster and faster all the way through to the finish. I was so elated and chuffed to be the first person back.

Can’t thank Thanet Roadrunners enough for their support especially at all of the track sessions.
