Folkestone 10 mile road race – a race of two halves
TWENTY TWO Thanet Roadrunners took part in Folkestone 10 mile road race on Good Friday (one day we’ll get them all in a photograph)!
This flat and fast course, which is normally blessed by warm weather and a pleasant sea breeze. It always is! But no, this year was to be a little different! The forecast was correct… 20-45mph winds!
As a result, this year Folkestone 10 was “a race of two halves.”
Brittany Crombie described the race…
“This race is super simple: 5 miles out, 5 miles back. Along Folkestone promenade, it provides a great opportunity to bag a PB. That wasn’t necessarily the case today. Behind runners on the way out, the wind didn’t feel like much of an obstacle. But as they rounded the corner to head back upon ourselves for the second half, they hit a wall of wind. Average pace went out of the window as runners battled against the wind. Some runners resorted to drafting, seeking out the tallest, broadest runner to sit behind. Others found themselves serving as drafters for other people. Not so simple, after all…
Congregating at the finish line, wind-swept and sweaty (though, from the photos, not Chris Pascoe who didn’t have a hair out of place…), the resounding feeling was one of frustration and dislike. Not even the finish line Creme Eggs were consolation enough for what runners had just put themselves through.”
In spite of this, there were some brilliant performances from an impressive contingent of blue vests:

Chris Pascoe and Sandra Baldock managed PBs, pushing really hard on the return leg, despite the wind. Chris, Sandra and Mark Croucher are really upping their game this year. Well done!
And lets not forget Dave Winch, who came in at 1hr 23 minutes. Sorry Dave, but we’re going to mention your age – 78 years old! An inspirational runner for us all. Never tell yourself you’re too old to run!
A special mention also goes to TRAC Juniors who participated in a 1.5km fun run at Folkestone today, represented by Maisie, Iris, Cobey and Lewis. Millie Grech (8 weeks old) also came along to enrol for the juniors early! Sorry Millie you have to be 9 years old, not nine weeks! She’s very proud of her dad!
