Race report – Alan Green 10 mile / 5 mile memorial race

Fantastic results for team TRACs runners today at the Alan Green 10 and 5 Mile Memorial Race 3rd December 2023

Alan Green was a founder member of Thanet Roadrunners in 1982.  We honour him every year through our 5 and 10 mile road race which takes place at the stunning cliff top locations of Cliftonville, Margate and Westgate.

Volunteers and Marshalls

First thank you to race director Terry Brightwell who has organised many races on behalf of Thanet Roadrunners. There is so much hard work and preparation that goes into making these races such a success and a safe environment for the runners to enjoy the day.

Thank you to all the TRAC members and friends who volunteered to set up and marshall this event and give the runners fantastic encouragement on their way round. A great way to get involved with the clubs events, and all very much appreciated.

And to the 1st St Peters Sea Scouts who bravely crewed the water station on a windy corner in Westbrook, thank you all so much.

Cake Competition!

As runners we seem to get very excited about cake and the event at the Alan Green race adds an extra element of competition too. Thank you to all who entered and contributed some delicious and amazing bakes. Congratulations to Jim Allen and children who won this years trophy.

Weather and Course Conditions

There was a strong wind coming off the land, but luckily as we were going along the coastline there were only a few pockets where we had to face a head wind. It was a cold morning but thankfully the rain stayed away for the most part. And only a few small pockets of seaweed on the proms to negotiate! So it could have been worse!

There was a fun atmosphere at the start line as we set off along a relatively flat course around the Thanet coastline which enabled some great times to be achieved. Highlights along the way are some iconic locations such as the Lido, Turner Contemporary, Margate Mains Sands, Dreamland and all the amazing bays along the way right from Palm Bay to Westgate and back.

Next Club Race is the Minnis Bay Cross Country on the 7th January. If you wish to take part in the running you must be signed up to the cross country – please contact club captains. If you are able to help out with marshalling that will as always be very much appreciated.
